Island GIS started working with Scottish and Southern Energy on the Beauly Denny project in 2010, looking to develop a web based service was developed to contain multiple spatial data layers.
The key business needs and objectives of the project were to set up a spatial management system for the Beauly Denny project that resolved communication barriers and managed a range of environmental constraints and geological issues. A total of 619 towers and 276 km of access track were to be mapped, giving access to 460 people, of which 70 were environmental professionals on the ground. In addition SSE also required wide ranging accessibility, in terms of technology platform and live feed of information and data.
The Island GIS service portal has been in constant development now supporting 2 additional major projects within SSE and several others externally. “We see this model as being prevalent across the major infrastructure projects in the UK and internationally”, said Paul Edmunds, CEO. “By centralising all information and project management reports, we were able to reduce administration costs and overheads and allow Project Managers to ensure quality and transparency of spatial data with all key stakeholders”.
Chris Meek, Lead Environmental Manager for Construction at Scottish and Southern Energy said “Island GIS provided us with the access, support and expertise without which, there would have been a significant negative impact from an environmental, financial, legal, programming and reputational perspective. By working with Island GIS we have made substantial cost savings across the project in terms of delivery and communication and avoided a number of potentially costly”.
